Another Reality
Yesterday I was at my Dad's house to clean up some water that had gotten into the basement after a heavy rain on Monday. Petal (a nickname her dad had given her), my dad's new young Jamaican caretaker, was helping me. There was lots of stuff to throw out with boxes getting wet and such. When we came across an old iron, the kind you heat up on a stove, Petal said her mom had used such an iron on her school uniforms and when she was done you could stand them up in a corner! She also said they had a curling iron for your hair that you heated up like that too. I said, "Didn't you have electricity?" She said yes, but they didn't get an iron until 1989. The same time they got color TV. Up until that time they had watched black and white.

A Delicate Subject
There is a product that I just recently saw on TV called "Just a Drop" that is to supposed create a deodorizing layer on the water surface in the toilet to neutralize odors instantly. I can not attest to it working but I looked it up on the internet and found that just the little bottle it comes in sells for $7-$9 plus shipping and handling! What I think may work perhaps just as well is "Odoban" which you should be able to find in most stores and is a lot cheaper.

Couch Surfing
No, this isn't about looking of a new sofa or a new sport for couch potatoes, but a new way to travel. Here's a statement from one Couch Surfer, Mike Laudico (United States):
"CS is more then just finding a place to crash. Its about meeting new people from different walks of life and learning about their mind, their country and their heart. Exchanging experiences and learning what their journeys around the sun have given them, and teaching what yours have given you. Its making connections across the globe that so often can turn into long lasting friendships. I am so happy that I have stumbled onto such a beautiful project and proud that I am a part of it. I have gained so many great friends and shared so many good times. A brilliant idea....much respect."

Bats
One of the things that Barbara mentioned in her eMo, "Pollination" yesterday was bats.
Well, I think it was when Brian was in 3rd grade the teacher invited parents on "Back-to-School" night to go through curriculum and pick something they'd like to come in and teach the class about. I picked "Endangered Species" from the science book. Of course being a teacher mine wasn't just a little lesson, it was like a whole unit! I had all kinds of activity stations around the room. The kids loved it. I remember did one section on bats. I had contacted an organization and gotten information pamphlets. It told about how useful they are and dispelled the myths about them.
We couldn't get through everything in the allotted time so the poor teacher just had to follow up and finish it with them, since the last activity they got to do upon completion of all the work was to rubber stamp a piece of paper with stamps of endangered animals and then wrap it around, what else but, a Pringle can, and then get to take it home. That was a big deal!
To learn the facts about bats go to Bat Conservation International:

We have bats in our backyard. They come out at twilight.

Some Views from the Outside of the Cathedral
Here's some pictures of the Cathedral front, side and Children's Garden. (Click on it to enlarge.)Note the lady with the little dog by her side. He has a camera around his neck in homage to all the tourists that visit and take pictures. Also see atop the one column the Trade Center Towers falling which was done before 911 and was to depict Armageddon.

7/7/07
Saturday was Barbara's daughter Anna's wedding to Chad Walker. I invite you to read the wonderful write-up by Deacon Joanna of More or Less Church, here on the Geranium Farm. I will be sharing photo's with you over the next few days including pictures of the magnificent Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. It is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. Barbara had arranged for us after the ceremony to have a tour, before going on to the reception. To find out more about the Cathedral go to:

I took a little over 100 photos so it's going to take me some time to get it all in order. More to come. Keep checking back. Debbie

Appliance Repairs
Our washing maching is on the fritz. It got to the part where it's supposed to pump out the water and the spin for the rinse cycle. It did neither so the clothes are now getting a good soak since late Wednesday night. There is a website you can go to for help.
It's:
http://www.repairclinic.com/
I bookmarked and told Paul . . .
Update on the washer repair -
Our washer is a Fisher & Paykal which is made in Australia. I found the U.S. number in California and gave them a call. The woman that answered must have been from Australia I think judging by her slight accent. I told her the problem and she said the pump just needed to be disconnected as there was something probably caught in it. Paul got the washer moved out and just before he started anything he called back since there were some wires that also had to be disconnected he wanted to double check with them. He's so funny. He said the guy that answered sounded like the Geico gecko. The man said he (I guess legally) couldn't tell him what to do so Paul said if I do such and such would that be right and he said he was headed in the right direction. Well, it turned out a Shout Color Catcher was wadded-up and stuck in there and removing it solved the problem!
I called back to tell the lady that the problem was solved and to thank them. I added that my husband said that the man he spoke to sounded like the Geico gekco and she laughed so hard. "Oh, he had to have spoken to the guy in Australia. I'm going to email him and tell him." We were both still laughing as we hung up.

Pitch a Birdhouse
We picked up this birdhouse mounted on an old potato pitchfork in Pennsylvania. The flowers are perennial balloon flowers. They make a beautiful addition to any garden and come in a variety of colors. Kids will get a kick out of them as they start out as a balloon shape and then split open to form the flower. You can see one that hasn't opened yet about even with the branch the birdhouse is on.

"Be Really Refreshed" *
Over the weekend we went to the Antiques Extravaganza in Adamstown, Pennsylvania. We hadn't been to it in quite a few years. I spotted this old Coke machine. My favorite one from my childhood. I thought you might get a kick out of seeing it. Oh, and the price on it was $1,600.
